roommate from hell Reviews
This was a bit of a mindf**k...not the worst I've read, but pretty potent for a short story. I really don't like bdsm...particularly the standard aspects of a "scene" (the St. Andrews cross, bdsm clubs, formal bondage and graded pain levels). I don't approve or disapprove...I'm just over it. However, I'm reading bdsm as part of a challenge, and I thought that with the college setting along with the relative brevity of this book, that I'd be getting off easy with this read. Boy, was I wrong!I couldn't give this book a low rating, because despite my issues with the content, it was lightning quick and far from boring...actually, I stayed pretty engaged. BUT, I couldn't give it a high rating because my fascination was wrapped up in varying levels of discomfort, horror and disgust...like watching a trainwreck with excessive carnage...My boundaries were pushed...and at times, exceeded. There were parts of the story that literally made me sick to my stomach. For example, (view spoiler)[the voluntary eating of "smegma" (literally defined as "a thick, cheeselike, sebaceous secretion that collects beneath the foreskin") In this book, this lovely substance was so old and putrid, it was crusted over, with the submissive describing how he broke up the pieces and used his tongue to scoop out the crumbs. Um...EEEEEEW! The submissive was also made to swallow huge gobs of mucus conjured up by his dom and spit directly into his open, waiting mouth.(hide spoiler)] Am I missing something. Is this in any way sexy? Revolting, seriously revolting. Heads up! This review will be almost identical to another book I'll be reviewing tonight "Group Work" by the same author. So, if you follow my reviews, you may experience a bit of "deja vu" when you read that one...there will be some differences though, because believe it or not, that book was even more offensive!
Self discovery and submissionI thought that Matt's faith got shaken a bit too easily and quickly to be realistic. Also, if he wasn't even allowed to watch Star Wars, how did he convince his parents to allow him to go to college, especially not a private, religious one?Xander was a pretty stereotypical alpha type. Though, again, if being at college is so important to him, why didn't he seem to try to get better grades?Despite a couple of spots where I had trouble suspending my disbelief, I actually liked both characters and the story was very hot.
