If faced with a situation which goes against your sense of right and wrong, would you have the courage to stand up for what you believe, regardless of the consequences? I'd like to think I' would, but it takes a great deal of courage and conviction. Yu Maguire in 'Sage' by J. Rocci goes against his entire way of life in order to put things right. How he faces the consequences will determine his future.Yu is amazingly clever and catches on to nuances which others miss. This is quite useful living with a man who seldom shows his feelings. He tries hard to successfully assimilate, but it's not an easy task, especially for someone who comes from Little Earde which is like being born on the wrong side of the rail road tracks. Yu is completely humiliated when he makes a mistake, but he's wise enough to learn from it. He's especially respectful of Amergin, trying hard to understand his customs and become a useful part of the household with Amergin, while sorting out his personal feelings for the man.Amergin Sil is an interesting character in more ways than one. He's very traditional in some ways, always maintaining his composure and strictly adhering to the customs of society, and very progressive in others, as in visiting a prisoner and inviting him to share his home. He admires Yu for his initiative and courage. He doesn't judge Yu by his past. Amergin sees him for the good man he knows him to be. Over the months of visiting him in prison, this admiration grows along with deeper feelings for Yu.'Sage' is an imaginative love story taking place in a world different, and yet the same than our own. Part of its charm is the uniqueness with which it's told. Frequently, the dialogue is understated, moving forward in a steady, controlled pace reflecting the atmosphere in Yu's and Amergin's fantasy world. If you are looking for a story which is both unique and satisfying, don't pass up this one. My only regret is that I wasn't ready for the story to end. I wanted to know more about Amergin and Yu. There's always hope for a sequel, right J.?NOTE: This book was provided by Torquere Press for the purpose of a review on Queer Magazine Online
This scifi novella is well written and richly imagined, a story on a multi-species world that is about friendship, class barriers, and the delicacy of love between two people with little in common. Yu is released from prison and now lives with Amergin, a cop who has become his friend. Yu's relief and discomfort upon being freed, yet barred from re-entering his old life and forced to build a new life as an ex-con, is finely etched. Amergin and Yu have huge cultural gaps between them, yet love finds a way. (This is not erotica.)
Really interesting background and characters, but not developed enough ... I would like to have seen more of this.
This was sort of a soft, understated fantasy story. Like everything else I've read by her, very well written and engrossing. She might become an "autobuy" for me.
This was short but interesting plotted novella. The story wasn't completed and I wouldn't mind reading more about this world.
